Sun 7 Jul – Syros to Sifnos

We woke up bright and early on Sunday morning, with a decent wind blowing through the anchorage. Should be a sporty sail about 25 miles south with the wind behind us. Up went the hook, and as we motored out of the bay a catamaran was heading straight for us. Pointing towards the boat Camilla cursed under her breath “What the heck is wrong with this guy?”, as the cat was coming speeding towards us. I was on the helm and the stand-on vessel so I just stared ahead and tried to ignore the boat coming suspiciously close to us. I was utterly surprised when the gravely voiced skipper on the cat shouted out “Hey, how is your Genoa”? Turns out helming the catamaran was … George! We exchanged a few thanks, and both set our sails towards Sifnos.

We were rewarded with a fantastic day sailing. A steady 15-20 knots behind the boat, a mostly flat sea and blue skies. How good it felt to be finally out sailing again is hard to put into words! As it is often the case, we didn’t see any other boats during the whole passage except for when we were headed into the anchorage, which turned into a little race with two other yachts. We used the opportunity to take some nice pictures of the other boats and as one of them ended up anchored right next to us I swam over to ask the owner if they wanted the pictures. The yacht was skippered by single hander Phil, who came over for a beer and a chat. We exchanged sailing stories as the sun went down, and turned in for an early night, exhausted but very happy.

  • ? Segler scheinen sehr gesellig zu sein, wahrscheinlich fühlen sie sich doch einsam auf dem Wasser?
