Thu 1 Aug – Generator hunting in Paros

Thursday started as slow as a day can start. We both woke up, realised it was way too early, slept a few more hours, and woke up still groggy. A cup of coffee is usually enough to get us going, especially when it’s that strong delicious stuff that we bought in Syros. Not today though. I guess beating into 25 knots of wind does take it out of you, just a little bit!

Around lunchtime we finally mustered enough energy to hop in the dinghy and go into town for lunch. Oh how hard this cruising life is! After lunch we went looking for the hardware store that was recommended by one of our friends. We want to buy a little Honda generators/inverter to be able to generate 240V whenever we feel like it. We’ve been living on 12V for most of the season and it’s fine, but being able to charge laptops or make hot water when we feel like it is a luxury that we’ve decided we can afford. So off we went to find one of these little Honda generators. They’re quite famous in the cruising community for being small, quiet and very handy. Staggering around in the summer heat we finally found the hardware store and it was surprisingly well sorted! They had a few inverters but not the one we were looking for. The guy in the shop was super helpful, and said he’d do some research to see who supplies these things in Greece. When I asked him if I should come back tomorrow, he replied with “Weeeell, it is Friday tomorrow …”, as if that’d make it clear to any sane person that Friday is not a good day to do anything, basically.  We agreed that I’d come back on Monday. The evening was spent with Phil and Erwin in a nice restaurant under a massive tree, eating delicious food and sharing sailing stories as it is so often the case when yotties get together.
